History
How it all began
Get ready for an incredible journey through the exciting history of What A Palaver!
Formed in 1993 by the tremendously talented Rob Sim and Ian Adcock, this dynamic duo delighted audiences around the world for over 25 years with their astonishing circus skills and hilarious comedy routines.
Rob had been dazzling crowds as an actor since 1980, mastering everything from Shakespeare to children’s shows. He added jaw-dropping circus abilities to his repertoire while working for Harrogate TIE in 1984. Ian taught himself how to juggle after a wild sledgehammer incident led to early retirement at Billy Smart’s Circus .
Their paths first crossed in 1985 at the marvelous Mr. Marvel’s Theme Park in Scarborough. There, they refined their skills as part of an eight-person circus extravaganza. They reunited in 1986 for a Shakespeare production in Oxford and went on to form The Traveling Players, a three-person theater company that treated audiences to self-written plays, street circus shows, and even a school panto tour!
After thrilling audiences for a couple years, Rob and Ian explored new opportunities. Rob returned to acting while Ian traveled to America. In 1991, Ian returned from his adventures and stayed with Rob for a few months that turned into three incredible years! During this time, they began developing brand new, awe-inspiring material. In 1993, What A Palaver was officially born!
Over the next 25 action-packed years, Rob and Ian performed all over the globe for countless delighted audiences of all ages. Using hilarious comedy and astonishing circus abilities, they entertained both indoors and outdoors, in theaters, cabarets, on TV, at private parties, corporate events, and anywhere else imaginable! Highlights included a two-decade run at Center Parcs’ medieval banquets, yearly appearances at The Robin Hood Festival and The Robin Hood Pageant, numerous shows at English Heritage sites, juggling footballs in front of 80,000 screaming fans at the Stade de France, dazzling crowds at the Quebec Medieval Festival, and TV performances on shows like The Ant & Dec Show, Blind Date, and Blue Peter! They donned costumes from every era you can imagine, and some you couldn’t!
In 2017, Ian retired from the thrill of live performance. After a brief hiatus, Rob courageously continued solo under the What A Palaver name. And the rest, as they say, is history…
An era filled with laughter, wonder, and applause for one of the most spectacular double acts ever seen!
